Church Insurance Guide

Does My Church Need D&O Insurance?

If you sit on a church board — as an elder, deacon, trustee, or officer — you've probably assumed your church's general liability policy has you covered if something goes wrong with a governance decision. It usually doesn't. That's what Directors & Officers (D&O) insurance is for, and it's one of the most overlooked coverages in church insurance.

What D&O Actually Covers

General liability protects against physical harm and property damage — someone slips on the sidewalk, a pipe bursts. D&O is different. It protects the people making leadership decisions — your pastor, board members, elders, trustees — against claims that arise from those decisions themselves.

Common triggers for a D&O claim at a church include:

  • A disputed termination of a staff member or pastor
  • Allegations of mismanaging church funds or the building fund
  • Conflicts over membership decisions or church discipline
  • Disputes during a church split or denominational separation
  • Claims tied to hiring or personnel decisions

None of these involve a physical injury, which is exactly why a standard general liability policy won't respond to them.

Why Smaller Churches Often Skip It

The most common reason we hear from church boards for not carrying D&O is some version of "we're a small congregation, nobody's going to sue us." Unfortunately, church governance disputes don't correlate neatly with church size. A 60-member congregation can end up in just as costly a dispute over a pastoral termination as a 600-member one — and without D&O, board members can be personally exposed, not just the church entity.

What It Typically Costs

D&O coverage for a small-to-mid-size church is usually a modest add-on to an existing package policy rather than a large standalone expense — but the exact number depends on your church's size, prior claims history, and whether you're bundling it with GL and property coverage through the same carrier.

The Real Question to Ask Your Board

It's not "will we ever get sued." It's: if a board decision were challenged tomorrow, would the people who made that decision — often unpaid volunteers — be protected? For most churches, the honest answer without D&O coverage is no.
